Our November 2011 Issue...

How often does one get to bid on a doll from a celebrity collection? On November 19 and 20 Theriault's will sell the important doll and automata collection of Candy Spelling.
A spectacular event, it deserves a grand setting, thus the sale will take place at the historic Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Also included in this sale and coming from a mid-west collection is the elusive Kammer and Reinhardt character model 106. In our November issue we bring you an in-depth look at the fabulous dolls and automata that will be offered.
We have real treat for you in this issue -- a visit with Anna May Case. Even without her enormous collection of dolls, a visit to the Case home, part of which dates back to 1731, is an unforgettable experience. Antique dolls, painted county furniture, tin ware, antique advertising, candy containers, holiday decorations, graniteware, quilts, red ware . . . the list is seemingly endless and she shows no signs of slowing down!
During the mid-nineteenth century, a short cloak known as a mantelet enjoyed nearly universal approval. Made of various materials they were suitable for casual wear as well as being easily adapted for an elegant promenade. Chiffonnette models four stylish mantelets, each a marvel of taste and delicacy and a complement to her costumes. Author and seamstress extraordinaire Sylvia Mac Neil has fashioned an easy to follow pattern so that you may make a mantelet for your own deserving poupée.
Part II of this year's UFDC antique competitive exhibit is featured in this issue. Enjoy the fabulous array of outstanding Blue Ribbon Winners in the French and German bisque categories!
Dating a doll is generally not an exact science. We can say that a certain Bru model cannot have been made after 1882 or that a character marked SFBJ cannot have been made before 1899, but pinpointing a specific date is nearly impossible. Dee Urquhart-Ross shares with us an F. G. bebe that can be precisely dated to the 23rd of July, 1888! You'll have to read her article to discover the doll's hidden secret!

We also bring you highlights from the September Gaithersburg doll show and a look at the upcoming James D. Julia's November 30 auction.

Happy Collecting!
